Four Key Benefits of Multi-Factor Authentication for MSPs

By Aaron Melear

Strong authentication is no longer a nice to have, it’s a must have - especially for managed service providers (MSPs), who build their businesses on reducing risk for their clients.

For security conscious MSPs, two-factor authentication (2FA) solutions are critical to a complete managed services offering. Here, we’ll look at four key benefits MSPs get when they leverage a powerful multi-factor authentication solution.

1. Address Security Risks to Your Business

Here’s the thing, if your own business isn’t secure, you can’t expect potential clients to trust you for their security solutions. MSPs are not immune from security risks, and because you have access to client machines and the highest level of administrative privileges, you’re dealing with an incredible amount of customer information. This makes securing your own business priority No. 1. An MSP facing a major breach or vulnerability could be detrimental to business, and result in loss of client confidence. By putting 2FA on all apps, MSPs are able to accurately validate the user upon authentication, which helps reduce risk from stolen credentials.

2. Deliver a More Complete Offering

As an MSP, your offering isn’t complete without 2FA. Period. It’s similar to the boom of anti-virus and endpoint protection in the late 1990s - it was once considered optional, now it’s essential. You wouldn’t offer a managed service today without some sort of protection on the end client. That’s where 2FA is today. It’s become mainstream. Five years from now, you won’t see a security offering that doesn’t include 2FA, whether it’s part of the native app experience or the overarching service. For MSPs to compete, you need a fully-integrated offering, and strong authentication completes the puzzle.

3. Gain Operational Efficiency

To be profitable, MSPs must be operationally efficient. Any inefficiency is covered by the MSP as an expense. The costs of remediation, implementation and more fall on you and don’t get passed to the client. If you spends more than expected on software or a project, you can lose money. 2FA prevents security incidents, which can be costly to remediate, especially with the amount of technician time involved. 2FA also reduces the number of password changes required for clients, which also frees up resources. The ability to implement a solution that’s easy to use and reduces security incidents is a win-win and results in fewer help desk tickets (and improved client satisfaction). This adds up to operational efficiency, and operational efficiency enables a profitable managed services offering.

4. Drive More Value Through Further Insights and Automation

Insights and automation may sound like buzzwords, but in the world of MSPs they’re huge value adds. Implementing 2FA on all applications helps you gather insights across your client base at the point of authentication, whether that’s in the cloud or on-premises. The ability to gather and analyze information about who is logging in from where and at what time is incredibly valuable to clients. And with a good 2FA solution, you can use APIs to build automation and efficiency into other security tools that can drive additional insights and increase the value delivered by the MSP to the client. The result is better client assessments and reporting, which can create more upsell and cross sell opportunities and increase your footprint with customers. With more insights and better information delivered to the client via service reports and assessments, a good 2FA solution helps MSPs become more sticky and differentiated with their clients.

For MSPs, 2FA has become a crucial part of any offering. The ability to deliver secure access to applications and resources gives you a competitive edge and security minded MSPs who leverage 2FA now will stand out from the crowd, see increased business and improved client satisfaction, along with the inherent security benefits of a strong authentication solution.
